Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator, used to smooth wrinkles an restore the volume.
Collagen is one of the key components of our skin, it provides the structure, strength and elasticity and helps to maintain volume and moisture. We lose collagen naturally and it causes the changes in the face. At the age of 20, we lose about 1 % of collagen per year. By age 40, most of us loose 20% of our natural collagen.

Sculptra stimulates natural collagen production in the treated area, by doing such, it restoes the loss volume, skin structure, smooth wrinkles and fine lines in the face and improves sagging and other sign of aging. It also improves skin quality as skin becomes firmer, increases skin`s smoothness and radiance.
Sculptra is made of very small particles of PLLA of poly-L-lactic acid, it is a man-made lactic acid polymer. Scupltra is biocompatible meaning it does not harm the body and biodegradable meaning the product that can be broken down by the body.
Scupltra comes as a powder form in a small vial. It reconstituted with sterile water and injected with a needle or cannula, a dull straw like tool design for administering injectables.
The result of the Scupltra treatment is not immediate, it may seem that that the treatment worked immediately because the swelling caused by aqueous solution, the mixture Scupltra microparticles with sterile water. The sterile water absorbs, in a few days you`d look the same before the treatment, the remaining microparticles in the skin remains and stimulate collagen and giving volume.
The best results appear within 4-6 months after the treatment. The procedure takes from 45minutes to one hour. The treatment requires multiple session. Generally, 1 vial per decade of age. For instance, if you 30 you will need, 3 vials, if you 40 you would need 4 vials, etc. The treatments are done four weeks apart. The result lasts up to 2-3 yeas sometimes longer.
Side effect includes bruising, asymmetry, nodules, hypertrophic scarring and keloids formation, excessive collagen production, nodules, pain, granulomas, skin discoloration, swelling, redness, pain/tenderness, bruising, itching, lumps/bumps, etc. The side effects generally resolve within a few hours to a few days but could last for 14 days or longer.
The post treatment instructions are important for best outcome. They include:
- Rules of three fives- massaging the treated are for five days, five times, for five minutes
- Minimize sun exposure to extensive sun, UV lamp, indoor tanning beds, extreme temperatures for the first 24 hr
- Optional icing within 24 hours
- Avoiding work out for 48 hours
- Make up application resumes after 24 hours
Contraindications. People are not candidates who:
- Have history severe allergies/ anaphylactic reactions, keloid formation, hypertrophic scarring are not candidates for the treatments
- Have history of allergies to lidocaine if Sculptra is reconstituted with lidocaine.
- Have acute or chronic skin disease (infection or inflammation) in the area that is treated
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
